Barber of Hell’s Bottom

Why we exist.

Hell’s Bottom is a premium men’s grooming brand founded by Kelly Gorsuch in 2013, rooted in a passion for innovation and elevated hospitality, the Bottom has earned consistent rankings as one of the top barbershops in America.

The name draws directly from the gritty past of Shaw in Washington, D.C.—the neighborhood where the first location opened. Post-Civil War, the area (once a contraband/follower camp) earned the notorious nickname “Hell’s Bottom” for its tough, lawless reputation. Kelly embraced that legacy, turning it into a bold identity for a modern barbershop.

The concept was born as an experiment in the back of Kelly’s luxury salon Immortal Beloved on Church Street in D.C. Growing up the son of hairdressers, Kelly had spent years mastering the craft. At the time, barbershops fell into two camps: retro vintage throwbacks or tattoo-studio vibes. Kelly saw an opportunity to innovate by blending upscale women’s hair cutting techniques and methods with traditional barbering, while adding something sorely missing—genuine guest hospitality and thoughtful interior design.

Kelly personally designs and builds each space, infusing them with an Americanized wabi-sabi aesthetic: natural materials, meticulous curation, mystery, and warmth that make every visit feel transformative and welcoming. His core philosophy drives it all—if he’s entering a business, he wants to push boundaries and create something fresh, with little interest in replicating what already exists.

From that single Shaw flagship, Hell’s Bottom grew into a multi-location staple, earning “Best Barbershop in America” recognition, hosting iconic moments (like LeBron James and Drake filming The Shop), and expanding to Richmond, VA. It’s more than grooming—he wants the guest to know that we care about them. That is what defines the elevated experience.
